CTK'S NEW PASTOR

It’s unanimous!

On February 6th, the members of Christ the King Presbyterian Church voted to call Rev. Travis Drake as the next senior pastor of CTK!

Pastor Travis started his ministry with us on May 2nd, and his family will move up from Philadelphia in the summer.

Meet the Drakes

Travis and Esther met in Washington, DC at the church they attended (Grace Mosaic). They got married in 2014 and moved to Dallas, TX, to start seminary.  But after that school closed, they moved back to DC to finish up ministry training at Reformed Theological Seminary. Meanwhile, Esther continued working for Teach For America on their national team (as she does today).   At that time, Travis had the opportunity to serve on staff at Grace Mosaic as the Pastoral Fellow in the same community where he and Esther met, got married, and had received the call to ministry.

In November 2015, God blessed them with their first son, Cal (6yr).  Then, in 2017, God surprised them with twin boys - Lachlan (4yr) and Lleyton (4yr).  Life has been very joyful (and very full) ever since.

The Drakes lived in DC until 2018 when God called them to Philadelphia for Travis to become an Assistant Pastor with Renewal Presbyterian Church.  They’ve enjoyed their time in Philadelphia and are looking forward to starting a new chapter in another great city.

CTK Impressions

Thoughts from the PSC

Throughout our search, we’ve gone back time and again to the CTK Church & Pastor profile, which we drew up using the feedback received from the congregation last fall. The main things we were looking for were

  • A shepherd who preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ every sermon, from the whole Bible.

  • Someone with the wisdom, communication, and leadership skills to lead the session and congregation into reshaping the mission and vision of CTK Cambridge.

  • Someone who can help encourage strong communication between the leadership and the congregation.

  • Someone who can identify spiritual needs of various groups in the church, equip existing and new ministry leaders through cycles of transience, and shepherd the congregation accordingly.

  • Someone with the gift of radical hospitality and warmth who can lead the congregation by example to welcome, include, and truly love those who walk through our doors, regardless of ethnicity, conviction, or socioeconomic status.

  • Someone with a beating heart for the diversity and complexity of the city, and who does not shy away from pushing us out of our comfort zone when needed.

  • Someone with the wisdom, discernment, and relational humility to lead an honest dialogue on questions related to gender roles, sexuality, and racial reconciliation.

We are staggered at God’s faithfulness in providing Travis, as these points could have easily been written as a description of him.  Of course, that is not to say that he does these things flawlessly — as with any candidate, he is not perfect.  But we are confident that, empowered by the Spirit, Travis will be a pastor who faithfully points us to our one good and perfect Shepherd.

Thoughts from Elders and Staff

Travis and Esther have a clear desire to root themselves deeply in the community, sharing God's love with their neighbors, and caring for those in need both inside and outside the church. I'm excited to see how God will use their gifts and strivings for his glory at CTK.

— Tim Carter, Ruling Elder

I’m delighted that Travis and Esther are both familiar with life in a city and want to continue to serve in a context like ours. Travis has a gentle and soft-spoken demeanor in interpersonal interactions that blends well with his heart for counseling. But in the pulpit, he can be dynamic and vivid, and the sermons I’ve listened to do a great job of connecting law and gospel in a Biblical way.

— Nathan Carter, Ruling Elder

Travis and Esther’s own life stories have uniquely prepared them for ministry in Cambridge. The redeeming grace of the Gospel of Jesus was evident quickly and deepened with continuing conversation. They are both thoughtful and reflective listeners. The relational aspect of ministry seems to be a particular focus and strength for them. There was real joy in our conversation as we as elders interviewed them. We were left with the distinct desire for more conversation and deeper Christian fellowship.

— Tim Dietz, Ruling Elder

Travis has a striking and welcoming presence from the moment you meet him that imparts knowledge and understanding. With a genuine and approachable demeanor and desire to serve God and proclaim the Gospel through strengthening the local church, Travis is ready and poised to step in as lead pastor at CTK and I would be excited to work with him.

— Dana Russell, Children’s Ministry Director

Warm and engaging, Travis has a heart for making the church a welcoming place in which the church body reflects the community outside of its doors. He strikes me as a thoughtful listener and the type of person who builds meaningful relationships, allowing people to feel like they are heard and that they belong. I believe Travis would bring energy, imagination, organization, and a passion to help CTK and our greater community experience the joy of salvation through Jesus.
